Grammy-winning music producer, Alex Medina (from Lecrae’s label, Reach) just did an interview with Relevant Magazine that happens to express some of what I feel about Christians in the entertainment industry, and I think you will find it interesting: HERE
Or if you don’t have much time, read a few of my favorite quotes. These tie into a C.S. Lewis quote I have always loved that I stuck at the very bottom of the post.
“…if we’re Christians and we want to do the work of evangelism, that’s how we do it. It’s not by making songs that only Christians are going to listen to—it’s by influencing the influencers, by entering spheres where non-believers are.”
“We lead by good art—that’s our main thing. We want to be good at what we do, we don’t want to hijack an art form and try to make it propaganda.”
“You’re doing God’s work in the sphere you’re in, and you should do it well, because you’re pointing to what it looks like to live in God’s Kingdom.”
In my mind, if “the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof” (Psalm 24:1), then it all belongs to Him, and we can take ownership of it in His name. We can write love songs because He authors love. We can write about pain and grief because He’s in control of those, too. And we should aspire to create quality that represents Him well!
Here is C.S. Lewis, summing it up perfectly:
“The world does not need more Christian literature. What it needs is more Christians writing good literature…What we want is not more little books about Christianity, but more little books by Christians on other subjects – with their Christianity latent.”
